CSCI elective on computer networks

Postby Tracy Camp » Thu Nov 05, 2009 5:42 pm

This course is an introduction to computer networks. It'll be partly taught
by me, and partly taught by a colleague of mine visiting in the Spring. The
timing of the course will be a bit atypical ... come chat with me if you have
interest in learning how networks work.

CSCI 498/598: Computer Networks and Their Evaluation
3 credit hours
TR at 3:30pm

Abstract:
This introduction to computer networks covers the fundamentals of computer
communications, with a focus on wireless communications and performance
evaluation. The network layer and data link layer of communication protocols
will be covered in depth; the physical layer and transport layer will be discussed.
Detailed topics include routing, one hop error detection and
correction, and medium access schemes. Other topics include the history of
computer communications and protocols for emerging networks (e.g., ad hoc
networks and sensor networks). In addition to core networking topics,
the art of performance evaluation will be introduced and used in several
case studies. Students will program client/server network applications
using TCP/IP standardized protocols and simulate/evaluate a wireless
network protocol in a network simulator.
